Start with staymat if you are building a base. The clay plain under this town stays wet, and wet ground punishes anything built light.

Ground and Conditions in Fairfield

Across the Champlain Valley the ground is heavy marine clay over silt and fine sand. Water moves through it slowly and sits near the surface.

Build a path or drive on a thin base over that clay and the edges break down first. The surface ruts, the stone pushes sideways, and the whole run loses its shape.

The fix is a thicker, better graded base and a drainage course under it. Staymat locks up tight because it runs from about 3/4 inch or 1 inch down to dust.

Bank run gravel goes underneath as subbase. It is screened from a pit or bank rather than crushed, and it carries the load so the crushed course above can stay thinner.

Work starts earlier in this valley than anywhere else in Vermont. The clay still stays soft for weeks through mud season and ruts under a loaded truck.

Winters run mild here, but the ground freezes hard and thaws again and again. Clay that holds water heaves a gravel drive more than a sandy soil does.

Frost depth is set by the town. Confirm footing depth with the Fairfield town office before you pour.

Materials for Fairfield Projects

Paths and walkways want fines. Stone dust, also called screenings, beds pavers, bluestone and flagstone, and binds into a firm surface on a garden path.

Pea stone, or 3/8 inch pea stone, suits walkways, dog runs and play areas. It stays loose underfoot and drains well.

Walkway gravel gives a finer, walkable surface than drive gravel. Use it where you want a path you can push a barrow down.

Under any of those, staymat is the compacted base. It is the Vermont yard word for a dense graded crushed base, and it takes a roller without moving.

For a longer drive, crushed gravel is the top course over bank run gravel. Vermont town road standards call for a crushed gravel surface course, and VTrans specifies it under 704.05.

Where you want a harder, more angular base than pit gravel, dense graded crushed stone is the spec name. It is graded from 3 inches down to fines.

For drainage, 3/4 inch crushed stone fills curtain drains, pipe surround and dry wells. Drain rock covers footing drains and downspout runs, the same idea VTrans carries as Drainage Aggregate under 704.16.

Stone fill, the Vermont word for riprap, lines steep ditches and armours culvert inlets and outlets. VTrans grades it by type, with Type I running about 1 inch to 12 inches.

Finish beds with screened loam, or garden soil where loam alone sits too heavy in a raised bed. Shredded mulch holds moisture through a short growing season.

Questions About Ordering in Fairfield

What should I have ready when the truck arrives?

Clear the drop area and make sure the truck can reach it. Mark nothing for the driver and expect no spreading.

The load tips in one pile where the truck can safely stop, so leave room for the pile and for the truck to pull away. Keep cars, bins and equipment out of the way.

What is the best base under pavers in Fairfield?

Staymat, then stone dust on top. The clay plain here holds water, so the compacted staymat base carries the load and the screenings give you a flat, firm bed for the pavers.

Bank run gravel goes under the staymat where the ground is soft or the run is long.
