“Volunteered to help redo the accessible walkway into the school garden beds in Bennington this spring. We used two and a half tons of #89 as bedding under the pavers, easy to screed level even for a crew of parent volunteers who'd never done it before. Vermont Rock Supply dropped the load right at the curb where the buses usually park. Kids have been rolling wagons over it all summer with no shifting.”

Everything You Need to Know About #89 Crushed Stone

Size and Grading

Type
Angular crushed stone

A contractor typically places #89 Crushed Stone after the supporting gravel work is complete, using it where a close-setting material is needed around pavers or beneath flagstone. Its crushed shape helps the material interlock, while the fines allow it to settle more firmly than open stone.

Vermont mud season and repeated freezing can expose weak preparation below a finished surface, especially on Champlain Valley clay or hill-country till. Keep this material for the tight finish portion of the job rather than treating it as open drainage fill. Spread it evenly in the prepared area and compact it before setting stone or working it into joints, so the surface has a stable, settled feel. It can also serve in chip-seal surfacing or concrete mixes where this type of aggregate is called for.

Why Choose #89 Crushed Stone

Firm Base

Small particles lock together with the fines to form a stable layer through freeze-thaw cycles.

Versatile

Use it for joint fill, bedding layers, concrete mixes, or surface treatments.

Clean Finish

Its even small-stone profile creates a tidy finished appearance.

Easy to Place

Move it into confined areas, then spread or brush it where needed with little effort.

Straightforward and Helpful

Ordered three tons of #89 to redo the drainage bed around our foundation here in Danville after a wet basement scare last spring.

Fixed the drip line along the house

Water was pooling along the north side of the house every time it rained, right where the roof drip line hits, out in Randolph. Dug a shallow trench and filled it with a ton and a half of #89. Small enough to rake smooth by hand, and it drains the second the rain lets up now instead of turning to a mud strip against the siding.

Paver patio finally sits flat and drains

Took on a paver patio and foundation drainage job for a client outside St. Screeded a bed with about three tons of #89 under the pavers and used another two tons as a drainage strip along the foundation wall itself. Come this spring's thaw the basement stayed dry for the first time the homeowner can remember, and the pavers haven't shifted an inch.
