“Regraded a three hundred foot driveway on a serious pitch for a client above Brattleboro, the kind of grade where regular bank run just washes into the ditch every time it rains hard. Put down twenty two tons of the 3/4 inch angular stone as the top layer over a compacted base, since it locks together instead of rolling downhill like rounded gravel would. Vermont Rock Supply sent a tri axle that handled the switchbacks on the access road, and the driver dumped three separate piles exactly where we'd need them for spreading. Through two full seasons of rain and one ice storm, the surface hasn't shifted or rutted.”

Everything You Need to Know About 3/4" Crushed Stone

Size and Grading

Size
Approximately 3/4 inch
Type
Angular crushed stone

A driveway approach or barn pad in Vermont needs its support course considered before spring thaw softens the ground. 3/4" Crushed Stone contains angular, irregular pieces whose broken faces engage when compacted. That behavior helps create a dense layer for traffic-bearing work, while spaces between pieces support drainage instead of surface pooling. Its plainly crushed appearance also fits exposed utility areas.

Champlain Valley clay and hill-country till can both hold moisture, and freeze-thaw cycles can work on wet ground. Keep ditches functional and establish the drainage route before placement. For driveway bases and parking areas, spread this stone as the supporting course and compact it during installation to limit movement under traffic. This keeps water handling from depending on stone alone.

Common Uses

Driveway & Road Base

Build driveway and road subbases with 3/4-inch crushed stone. Compact it well to form a firm layer for vehicle traffic and help limit surface wear. This matters on Vermont driveways through mud season and freeze-thaw cycles.

Construction & Building Foundations

For footings at homes and pads for commercial buildings, 3/4-inch crushed stone forms a load-supporting layer below the foundation. It also lets water drain through the base, which suits foundation work in areas with deep frost and freeze-thaw cycling.

Drainage Systems

Sized 3/4-inch angular stone holds its position while leaving open routes for water. Place it for French drains, utility trench backfill, and stormwater control systems.

Retaining Wall Backfill

Retaining walls need backfill that drains and supports the wall. 3/4-inch crushed stone suits the space behind block, timber, and stone walls by combining stable backfill with water movement.

Why Choose 3/4" Crushed Stone

Compacted Base Stability

Compaction draws the uneven, angular pieces of 3/4-inch crushed stone into a locked layer. The resulting base helps limit shifting, rutting, and erosion where loads are heavy.

Drainage

Uniform 3/4-inch stone leaves open spaces for water to move through. Drainage can help reduce puddling, ice buildup, and water exposure near structures and foundations.

Flexible Project Use

Use 3/4-inch crushed stone for driveway work, drainage layouts, and landscaping tasks. It also fits ditching and stone fill work common during mud-season driveway rebuilds.

Bulk Material Use

Order bulk 3/4-inch crushed stone for projects that need a stable aggregate layer. It can serve in construction work with routine maintenance needs.

Right stone, wrong corner of the yard

Ordered nine tons of the 3/4 inch for a client's driveway base near Ludlow, standard job I've done a dozen times. Stone graded out fine and compacted the way it should. Driver ended up dumping the whole load at the top of the driveway instead of down by the garage where the delivery notes clearly said, so my crew spent an extra hour moving it by wheelbarrow before we could even start spreading.

Camp road stands up to summer traffic

Own a small camp on the pond in Island Pond that we rent out most of the summer, and the access road was getting chewed up by every renter's truck and boat trailer. Vermont Rock Supply delivered fourteen tons of 3/4 inch stone in one trip, tri axle handled the narrow lane fine and dumped it exactly along the worst ruts. First full season of guests behind us and the road hasn't potholed once.

Base layer for our farm drive

Ten tons of the 3/4 inch went down as a base layer for the steep stretch of our farm drive in Wallingford, right where it drops down toward the sheep barn. Angular edges grabbed onto the packed dirt better than the rounded stuff we used years ago. Tandem driver eased down the hill carefully and dumped it in two piles so we could spread by hand without hauling far.
