Ground here is heavy Champlain Valley clay, so grading and bed prep come before anything else. Start with the soil and fill, then build the base on top.

Materials for Enosburg Falls Projects

Grading and bed prep lead every job on clay. Strip and shape first, then bring in the stone.

Top Soil, which Vermont yards call screened loam, finishes lawns and beds over stony till and heavy clay. It spreads and rakes to a seedbed.

Garden Soil is a raised bed mix for planting areas where screened loam on its own sits too heavy.

Fill Dirt raises grade, backfills and shapes ground away from a foundation before the gravel goes on.

For the base itself, Staymat is the Vermont yard word for a dense graded crushed base running from about 3/4 inch or 1 inch down to dust. It locks up tight under a roller on drives, parking pads and shed bases.

Bank Run Gravel, also called pit gravel or gravel borrow, is screened rather than crushed. It works as subbase and bulk fill under a thinner crushed top course.

For water, Drain Rock feeds curtain drains, footing drains, dry wells and downspout runs. 3/4" Crushed Stone is washed stone for drainage beds and pipe surround.

Under flatwork, Stone Dust beds pavers, bluestone and flagstone. Washed Sand levels under slabs.

3/8" Natural Pea Gravel, or pea stone, suits walkways, dog runs and dry wells. River Rock handles decorative beds and dry creek beds.

Ground and Conditions in Enosburg Falls

Across the Champlain Valley, the ground is marine clay, silt and fine sand left when the Champlain Sea flooded the lowland. Clay drains slowly and stays wet.

Snowmelt and summer storms sit on the surface instead of soaking away. Flat ground and a high water table keep it there.

A drive here needs a drainage course as much as it needs a base.

Bare clay washes and gullies, and streams cut into the clay plain. Stone fill, the Vermont word for riprap, lines steep ditches and armours culvert inlets and outlets.

Work starts earlier in the valley than elsewhere in Vermont because the ground dries first. The clay still stays soft for weeks through mud season and ruts under a loaded truck.

Winters run mild here, but the ground freezes hard and thaws again and again. Clay that holds water heaves a gravel drive more than sandy soil does.

Footing depth is set by the town, so confirm it with the town office.
