Crusher run calculator for Vermont
A pavement-like base calculated at finished compacted depth, not loose-fill estimates.
Enter your project dimensions
Material in the truck settles 10-15% as it compacts. If you buy only for the measured depth, the completed base can end up half an inch short. This calculator therefore starts with a +10% allowance. You may see this material called Bank Run Gravel, pit gravel, gravel borrow in Vermont, or 2 inch minus on tickets. These names refer to crushed stone containing fines, about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, which compacts into a tire-resistant surface.
Calculate for finished depth
- Find the footprint in feet: multiply lane length by width, or measure the pad sides.
- Enter the finished compacted depth: 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 for trucks.
- Convert cubic feet / 27 = yards, then x 1.5 = tons. Leave the +10% selected. Specifications apply after rolling.
Ton coverage
| Compacted depth | 1 cubic yard covers | 1 ton covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | ≈ 108 sq ft |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | ≈ 54 sq ft |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | ≈ 36 sq ft |
| 8 inches | 41 sq ft | ≈ 27 sq ft |
Uses and limits
- For driveway bases, compact 4-6 inches, then add 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the driving surface.
- For low-cost rural lanes, crusher run can form the driving surface. Plan on summer dust and regrading every 2-4 years.
- Paver and slab bases need 4 inches installed in 2-inch compacted lifts. The Paver Base Calculator covers the complete paver stack.
- Sugarhouse and barn pads need 4 inches over stripped ground, or 6 on soft soil.
- Keep it out of French drains. Its binding fines retain water, while drainage calls for clean #57 or drain rock.
Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad
For 200 square feet compacted to 4 inches, 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. With allowance, order 4 tons. Place and compact the first half, then repeat with the remaining material. Building in two 2-inch lifts lasts years longer than placing one 4-inch layer, especially through deep frost and freeze-thaw cycling.
Delivery details
- Schedule base and surface stone together in one delivery. Delivery is free either way, and the project can keep moving.
- Start with the pile tipped at the outer end of the run, then spread back toward it. On large pads, working downhill can save a full day.
- Before compacting, lightly wet each lift. Damp crusher run binds tighter than dry material.
- Hold back a wheelbarrow-load for repairs. Use the remaining crusher run to patch potholes as they develop.
Pricing approach
Crusher run is produced without the washing and sorting used for other stone. On a 4-ton order, the +10% allowance may avoid a separate half-ton delivery. See the Crusher Run product page for the per-ton price, compare Road Base, and order both driveway layers in one free delivery.
