“A sinkhole opened up in the back pasture outside Georgia last fall, right where the cows like to gather near the old sugarhouse. Nine yards of fill dirt went in to bring the low spot back level with the rest of the field. The driver worked around the mud to get the truck close enough, and dumped it in three loads so I could spread it with the tractor bucket between rounds. Graded it flat and packed it down hard with repeated passes. Six months of cattle walking over it now and the ground shows no sign of settling or caving back in.”

Mud season can expose every low spot around a driveway, barn pad, or building area. Fill Dirt supplies screened earthen material for bringing those sections up, restoring ground around an excavation, and setting the broad contours of a site. Its limited organic content suits it to work below later construction or soil cover rather than as a planting medium.
In the Green Mountains and Champlain Valley, frost movement and spring softness make preparation important before a surface is installed. Place Fill Dirt to the intended contour, then compact the material before covering it with a driveway base or other finish. Where the graded area is intended for planting, add topsoil after the fill work is complete so vegetation has an appropriate growing medium.

Common Uses
Grading the Site
Before building or landscape work, fill dirt can shape the needed contours across home sites and commercial parcels. Planned slopes help move runoff, locate buildings, and organize the landscape, especially where Champlain Valley clay holds spring moisture.
Foundation Backfill
Place compactable fill dirt around foundation walls, retaining walls, and subsurface structures. With minimal organic matter, it resists the decay and settlement associated with organic soils, helping maintain stable support.
Building Up Depressed Ground
Fill dirt can raise spots where water ponds, mud develops, or drainage is poor. Adjusting the elevation guides water away from buildings and occupied spaces and can address recurring wet conditions.
Filling Holes and Voids
Bulk fill dirt is suitable for former pools, unused basements, excavation openings, and sizable holes. Once compacted, it creates a firm base for later work, including construction or lawn work.
Why Choose Fill Dirt
Bulk Material for Large Fill Areas
For extensive grading or fill work where a planting-quality soil is unnecessary, fill dirt is a practical earthwork material. It can be used to bring broad areas to the required elevation.
Firm Compaction
The mineral content in fill dirt allows it to compact densely and limit later settlement. That characteristic supports paved surfaces, structures, and soil placed over the fill.
Low-Organic Fill Material
Fill dirt has very little organic matter, unlike soils that can shrink as organic components break down. Properly prepared grades can therefore retain their intended form.
Earthwork Fill
Use fill dirt for initial shaping, backfill, and filling depressions during site preparation. It forms the working subgrade beneath later building and landscape installation.

Customer Reviews
On time delivery, clumpy clay load
A low spot behind our rental in Hinesburg needed leveling before we could reseed it, so we ordered about four yards of fill dirt. The truck showed up right in the window they gave us, no waiting around.

Leach Field Trench Filled And Compacted
Ten yards of fill dirt to backfill the trench left after we put in a new leach field out back. Vermont Rock Supply spread the delivery over two piles so we could work one side while the excavator finished grading the other. We compacted it in layers, about six inches at a time, tamping each pass before adding the next so it wouldn't settle into a dip once the grass went back in.

Graded out the soggy corner
Backyard corner in Essex held water every spring thaw, low enough that nothing would grow there. Three yards of fill dirt raised it up almost a foot, graded it with a rake to slope away from the house. Topped it with real soil before seeding grass over the top. Dry as the rest of the lawn now, even after a wet April.
