“Stone screenings went down along the fifteen foot strip between the sugarhouse and the woodshed, two tons total, before this year's boil got going. Vermont Rock Supply got the load out here early enough that we had time to grade it right, sloping it slightly away from the sugarhouse door so runoff wouldn't pool against the sill. It packed down solid fast once the truck traffic and our own boots worked it in, and it held up fine the whole sap run, day after day of hauling split wood down to the evaporator no matter how wet the ground got everywhere else on the property.”

The fine crushed material in Stone Dust settles closely when moistened and compacted, producing a dense, flat layer for pavers and other hardscape surfaces. It is intended for close leveling and bedding work, not for taking the place of the gravel support beneath the project. Its fine content fills minor gaps beneath surface material, helping limit rocking during installation. It is also useful for smoothing ground prior to concrete placement where a flat surface is required.
Vermont's deep frost and spring mud make groundwork especially important around patios, paths, sugarhouse entrances, and barn pads. Establish drainage and supporting gravel before bringing Stone Dust to grade, then work it damp with a compactor so the finished layer stays even as surface pieces are fitted. A clean edge and controlled grade also make the finished work easier to maintain through changing seasons.

Common Uses
Bedding for Pavers & Flagstone
For paver or flagstone work, use stone screenings as the leveling bed. Their fine texture compacts into an even, stable layer that helps the finished surface stay in position and reduces settling.
Leveling the Base
For a level subgrade before concrete, decking, sheds, or hot tubs, spread stone screenings first. Its fine texture packs into low areas to make a smooth, compacted foundation.
Filling Joints
Fill the spaces in pavers, flagstone, and brick with swept-in stone screenings. Once compacted, the fines tighten the joints, help hold the units together, and discourage weed growth.
Firm Paths
Because water and compaction bind the fines together, stone screenings suit garden trails, service walks, and low-use spaces. The resulting hard surface supports wheelchairs and garden carts.
Why Choose Stone Dust
Dense, Even Finish
Coarse aggregate cannot produce the same tightly packed, smooth finish as stone screenings. Choose screenings when the work calls for a flat, even base.
Cost-Conscious Material
Screenings come from the rock-crushing process and are generally an economical aggregate option. They can provide the needed fine-material performance at less cost than engineered base materials.
Binding When Compacted
Water and compaction allow stone screenings to knit together into a nearly solid layer. That binding helps the surface remain stable and limits erosion or displacement without added binders.
Detail-Finish Aggregate
Stone screenings work for paver bedding, joint fill, and smooth path surfaces. They are suited to the finishing steps of many hardscape projects.

Flagstone patio sits rock solid
Set a flagstone patio for a client in Salisbury on top of about three tons of stone screenings, screeded level under each piece before setting it in a bit of sand. Had it delivered the same week we ordered, tandem truck dumped it right on the tarp we laid at the edge of the driveway.

Happy With My Order
Two tons of stone screenings for a shed pad and a short path to the garden in Cornwall. Compacts hard once it's tamped and drains fine.

Barn aisle and wash stall firmed up
Three horses split time between two run-in sheds on our place in Shrewsbury, and the aisle between them turned to soup every mud season along with the wash stall apron out front of the barn. Eight tons of stone screenings went down across both spots and the connecting path, packed hard with a plate compactor over a weekend. The truck had the load there before I'd even finished raking out the old muck line.
