“Used nine tons of #8 for pipe bedding, tamped a base layer under the new pipe and covered it before backfilling with the dirt we'd pulled out. Vermont Rock Supply had a tandem out here two days after I called, driver backed down the field lane careful of the fence posts and dumped it in two spots along the trench. Ground settled evenly over the winter and the tile finally moves water the way it should.”

Mud season makes Champlain Valley clay and hill-country till soft, so runoff and seepage need attention before a patio, drain, or barn pad is finished. #8 Crushed Stone has clean crushed pieces with minimal fine material. That leaves an open texture suited to drainage layers, paver settings, and concrete batches. Its role is to handle water within the assigned detail, not to replace ditches or a proper outlet.
For paver construction, prepare a gravel base and drainage arrangement before placing this material in the designated setting area. This approach suits Vermont freeze-thaw conditions and keeps the small stone in a role matched to its open character. A base intended to support traffic or the full hardscape should be established separately before this stone is used.

Great topcoat for the garden path
Laid a stone dust base first, then topped a sixty foot garden path with two tons of #8 out at our place near Hardwick. Nice and angular so it locks together underfoot instead of shifting like the pea gravel we tried before. Delivery driver dumped it right at the top of the driveway on a tarp like I asked, easy shoveling from there.

A second trench we hadn't planned for
We needed pipe bedding for a barn floor drain here in Poultney and picked up two tons of the #8. Digging turned up a low spot I hadn't accounted for, so a second short trench ate into the pile faster than I expected.

Campground paths hold up to foot traffic
Run a small campground outside Waterbury and needed to redo the gravel paths between eight sites before Memorial Day. Ordered six tons of #8 after the big-box store quote came back almost double. Tri axle dumped two piles right at the edge of the loop road, and we wheelbarrowed it out over a couple afternoons.
