“The county road lane into our place in Peacham turns to soup every April, and the milk truck was starting to refuse the last hundred feet before we did something about it. We put down twenty five tons of the #4 over geotextile fabric last spring, tamped it in hard with the tractor bucket the same week. One mud season later the lane holds fine, the truck doesn't sink, and my husband finally stopped grumbling about the driveway every March.”

Angular crushed stone

A common mistake during mud-season work is putting #4 Crushed Stone where tires need a tighter surface. Its crushed, angular form leaves broad open spaces, so it drains freely but does not create a closed travel course. The stone's weight and shape help it resist shifting under heavy loads. A tighter material can be placed above it when a compacted travel finish is needed.

Champlain Valley clay and hill-country till can soften in spring, while freeze-thaw adds movement beneath traffic areas. Use this stone in the supporting base of a driveway rebuild or barn pad, then keep ditches working so water is carried away from the traffic area. That approach is useful when spring water drains slowly from clay and till and traffic returns before the ground firms. On slopes and ditches, its open structure suits erosion-control stone where runoff needs a heavy material.

Finally a farm lane that survives mud season

Solid base under new construction

We spread eighteen tons of #4 for the base under a new build outside Rutland, ledge rock about two feet down so drainage matters. The tri axle backed in tight to the foundation and dumped exactly where the crew marked. Compacted it in two passes and it's held through a full winter of frost without shifting under the footings.

Culverts finally drain after spring runoff

At seventy two I don't move rock myself anymore, so I called Vermont Rock Supply for ten tons of #4 to fix the culvert ends along our driveway in Woodstock. The driver was patient backing down our narrow lane and dumped it in two spots without tearing up the lawn. Spring runoff used to wash out the ends every year, and this time the water just ran through.
