“Redid the fall zone under the swing set at our small preschool in Fairfax with four tons of 3/8 inch pea gravel. Kids love the feel of it barefoot in warmer months and it cushions falls better than the bark mulch we had before. We ringed the whole play area with landscape timbers first so it stays contained instead of migrating onto the lawn.”

Vermont spring mud can leave Champlain Valley clay and hill-country till soft around landscape work. 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel works as a visible, loose finish on walks, outdoor sitting spots, and drainage details, where rainfall can pass between the pieces instead of collecting at the surface. Its natural earth-tone mix gives the ground a varied appearance without looking manufactured.
Deep frost and freeze-thaw can affect the ground beneath a project, so establish firm support before placing this gravel. Use a stable underlying layer for a walking or seating area, then keep the pea gravel as the exposed finish. The rounded texture is comfortable underfoot and also suits play spaces. Unlike organic mulch, this material does not break down over time.

Common Uses
Patio Spaces & Outdoor Living
For a patio that lets water pass through, spread natural pea gravel. The rounded surface feels easy on bare feet, drains well, and sits nicely alongside flagstone, brick edging, and outdoor furniture for an informal look.
Walkways & Garden Paths
For simple paths through beds and gardens, pea gravel is a pleasant, straightforward option. Use steel, stone, or brick edging to contain the material and give planting areas a neat, gently curving boundary.
Playgrounds & Play Areas
For children's play areas, pea gravel offers rounded stones rather than the sharper profile of angular aggregate. It drains readily, avoids the insect concerns of wood mulch, and gives the area a natural ground surface.
Drainage & Ground Cover
Set pea gravel beside foundations, below downspouts, through drainage swales, or over spots where grass has trouble growing. Its open texture allows water to pass through while giving wet areas a tidy finish through the seasons.
Why Choose 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel
Comfortable & Safe
Pea gravel's smooth, rounded stones are easy to walk on, including with bare feet. Since it has no sharp edges, it can also work well in play spaces and busy pedestrian areas.
Naturally Varied Color
Pea gravel brings together warm, earth-colored stones that give planting areas and landscapes added texture. Since these shades occur within the stone instead of being applied as dye, they resist fading, chipping, and washing away over time.
Free-Draining Surface
Pea gravel's small, consistent pieces leave room for water to pass through, helping limit standing water near foundations, patios, and planting beds without complicated drainage work.
Simple Upkeep
Wood mulch breaks down from season to season, while pea gravel continues doing its job and holding its appearance for years with little care. When the surface needs freshening, a garden-hose rinse is usually enough.

Perfect fill under the new deck
Filled the space under our new deck in Pawlet with two tons of the 3/8 inch pea gravel instead of leaving bare dirt for weeds to take over. Rounded and smooth, easy to rake level even in the tight crawl space.

Dog run and fire pit both done right
First summer in our new place in Shelburne and we had two projects going at once, a dog run along the side fence for our lab and a fire pit patio out back for evenings outside. Vermont Rock Supply delivered three tons total, split between the two spots, and the driver was patient dumping smaller piles in each location instead of one big pile blocking the yard. We edged both areas with steel edging before spreading so the pea gravel would stay put, since we'd read it scatters without a border. Round and smooth underfoot, the dog doesn't track it inside, and bare feet love the fire pit area.
