“Spring thaw here in Rockingham keeps sending water into the cellar window wells, so I ran a proper drain line around two sides of the foundation this year. Two and a half tons of drain rock wrapped in fabric did the trick.”

Everything You Need to Know About Drain Rock
Size and Grading

Drain Rock can remain exposed at a drainage outlet or along a swale, so its appearance matters as much as the route water takes. Rounded material has a softer, natural look for visible work. Angular material has edges that key together, which helps it retain the voids needed when fill is placed above it.
Across the Champlain Valley and hill country, spring mud and deep frost can leave water trapped in clay or till. Use this stone as the drain layer in a ditch or at the back of a retaining wall, rather than blending it into surrounding soil. Keeping the drainage path clean helps collected water move away from the work. It also fits septic field work where unrestricted flow through aggregate is needed.

Common Uses
French Drain Systems
In a French drain, drain rock creates open channels for water to travel through. It helps route water away from low ground, basements, and foundation areas, a useful consideration during Vermont mud season.
Septic & Leach Field Construction
Septic drain fields use drain rock as a bed that allows wastewater to infiltrate. The clean, evenly sized stone supports the specifications set by the health department for these systems.
Retaining Wall Backfill
A retaining wall needs a way for water behind it to escape. Without drainage, hydrostatic pressure can accumulate and damage the wall. Backfill with drain rock keeps a clear route for that water.
Foundation Drainage
Set drain rock at the foundation perimeter so groundwater can drain away from footings and basement walls. This helps limit moisture intrusion and pressure that may contribute to cracking or structural damage through freeze-thaw cycles.
Why Choose Drain Rock
Water Flow Capacity
With fines and dust washed away, drain rock has open spaces that allow water to pass freely. That drainage capacity helps the system work as intended from installation onward.
Lasting Open Structure
Under load, the angular pieces of drain rock hold open spaces better than rounded aggregate, which can settle and compact. This helps preserve drainage flow over decades.
Clean & Specification-Grade
Washed, graded drain rock is used in drainage installations with perforated pipe, drainage fabric, and related components. Its clean stone structure leaves room for water movement.
Structural Protection
Drain rock gives water an outlet from around foundations, retaining walls, and other structures. Reducing trapped moisture and hydrostatic pressure can help avoid structural repairs.

Simple fix for the drainage ditch
Two tons of drain rock for a small dry well beside a rental driveway in Westminster. Clean and well washed, drains fast now. Driver dumped it right at the edge of the lawn exactly where we asked.

Retaining wall drains perfectly behind it
Built a stacked block retaining wall for a sloped yard outside Townshend and needed clean drain rock behind it so the wall wouldn't get hit with hydrostatic pressure every spring thaw. Used about six tons total, three feet deep behind the wall with a perforated pipe running out to daylight at the low end. Vermont Rock Supply's tri axle backed down the shared driveway carefully, tight quarters with a neighbor's fence on one side, and dumped it in two piles right where we needed to shovel from. Wall's been through a full spring melt and several heavy rains, completely dry behind the block with no staining.

Foundation stayed dry through spring melt
Trenched a French drain around the uphill side of an old farmhouse foundation in Dummerston that had water seeping through the fieldstone every spring. Ordered four tons of drain rock, wrapped the pipe in fabric and backfilled it right up to grade. Basement's stayed bone dry through this year's melt, first time in the owner's memory.

Fines at the bottom slowed things down
Drain rock for the dry well behind the equipment shed in Guildhall. Two tons, dumped close enough to wheelbarrow easy. Bottom of the pile was thick with fines, more dust and sand than clean rock. Rest of the load was solid. Vermont Rock Supply got it here on schedule.
