Vermont Rock Supply brings gravel and aggregate delivery in Cambridge, VT, and the surrounding Lamoille County towns. Order staymat for a drive, stone dust for a path, or washed stone for drainage, all by the ton or the yard.

Cambridge sits in the Green Mountains, where thin, stony ground and a short working season shape what you order and when you order it.

Ground and Conditions in Cambridge

Across the Green Mountains, soil runs thin and stony over bedrock, with boulders and ledge close to the surface on the slopes. Sand and gravel outwash sits on the valley floors.

A thin base fails first on a path or drive that takes runoff. Water finds the soft spots, the surface ruts, and the edges start to break down.

Rain and snowmelt run off steep, shallow soils fast, so brooks rise quickly. A drive on a grade sheds water down its own surface unless the crown and the ditch line are right.

Steep-gradient streams scour banks, ditches and culvert outlets in heavy rain. That is the pattern that did the worst damage in the mountain towns in the August 2011 flooding.

The working season is short. Mud season arrives later and lasts longer up high, and the ground freezes again sooner, so base and paver work is squeezed into late spring through early fall.

Frost sits in the ground well into spring, and hard frost heaving works on gravel drives and camp roads. Footing depth is set by the town, so confirm it with the Cambridge town office.

Materials for Cambridge Projects

Fines and screenings do the finish work on paths and walkways here. Stone dust is the New England default under flatwork, and it beds pavers, bluestone and flagstone.

Stone dust also binds into a firm, walkable surface on a garden path. Walkway gravel gives a finer, walkable surface than drive gravel where you want a looser finish.

Under all of it, staymat is the everyday Vermont word for road base. It is a dense graded crushed base running from about 3/4 inch or 1 inch down to dust, so it locks up tight under a roller.

Staymat carries driveways, parking pads and shed bases. Vermont town road standards call for a crushed gravel surface course over a bank run gravel subbase, and dense graded crushed stone is the spec name for the same idea.

Bank run gravel is gravel taken from a pit or bank and screened rather than crushed. It goes in as subbase and bulk fill under a thinner crushed top course.

3/4 inch crushed stone is washed stone for drainage beds, curtain drains, pipe surround and mud-season hardstanding. Vermont buys washed stone by the inch far more often than by a number.

Drain rock handles curtain drains, footing drains, dry wells and downspout runs. Stone fill, the Vermont word for riprap, lines steep ditches and armours culvert inlets and outlets.

For lawns and beds, screened loam goes over stony till and heavy clay. Vermont landscapers say loam rather than topsoil and buy it screened.

Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, and each product page has a calculator to help you size the load. Pick your delivery date at checkout and a dump truck tips the material on site.

Delivery covers Cambridge and the wider Lamoille County area, including Stowe, Johnson, Hyde Park, Morrisville and Wolcott.

Have the drop spot clear and reachable before the truck arrives. The load comes off in one pile, so the spot you choose is where the material stays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Cambridge, VT

What should I have ready when the truck arrives?

Have the drop spot clear of vehicles, tools and overhead branches, with a firm surface the truck can reach. The driver tips the load in one pile, so pick a spot where the material can stay until you move it. If the ground is soft from mud season, choose a harder standing area nearby.

What is the best base under pavers in Cambridge?

Staymat is the dense graded crushed base that locks up tight under a roller, and it is what Vermont yards call road base. Over the thin, stony till common on the slopes, a compacted staymat base gives pavers a firm, even bed. Stone dust then beds the pavers themselves and fills the joints.

How is the material measured?

You can order by the ton or by the cubic yard, whichever suits how you plan the job. If you tell us the area you are covering and the depth you want, we will work the quantity out with you rather than leaving you to guess.
